Self-similar jet evolution after drop impact on a liquid surface

نویسندگان

چکیده

Small conical-shaped jets may emanate from a liquid bath short while after small drop has hit pool. Here we perform Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements of the flow inside upward impact and show that fluid elements decelerate up to 5-20 times gravitational acceleration. The both shape jet velocity profile are self-similar. A theoretical model including surface tension, inertia, gravity correctly predicts self-similar jet, allowing us provide first quantitative explanation dynamics emanating jets.

Self-similar breakup of a Giesekus jet

We derive a self-similar solution which describes the asymptotic behavior of a jet of a Giesekus fluid as the breakup point is approached.

Impact of a viscous liquid drop.

We simulate the impact of a viscous liquid drop onto a smooth dry solid surface. As in experiments, when ambient air effects are negligible, impact flattens the falling drop without producing a splash. The no-slip boundary condition at the wall produces a boundary layer inside the liquid. Later, the flattening surface of the drop traces out the boundary layer. As a result, the eventual shape of...

Numerical Simulation of a Single Drop Impact on Liquid Surface using Particle Method

The process of single liquid drop impact on thin liquid surface is numerically simulated with Moving Particle Semi-implicit (MPS) method. The mathematical model involves gravity, viscosity and surface tension. The model is validated by simulation of the experiment of Wang and Chen (2000) and Manzello and Yang (2002). It is found that the dynamic processes after impact are sensitive to the liqui...

Self-Pinning on a Liquid Surface.

We report on the first experimental evidence of a self-pinning liquid drop on a liquid surface. This particular regime is observed for a miscible heavier oil drop (dichloromethane) deposited on an aqueous solution laden by an ionic surfactant (hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide). Experimental characterization of the drop shape evolution coupled to particle image velocimetry points to the correl...

Self-similar jet breakup for a generalized PTT model

We discuss self-similar solutions for jet breakup for a family of models of nonNewtonian fluids which includes the Phan-Thien Tanner model. The constitutive law is given by Tt + (v · ∇)T− (∇v)T−T(∇v)T + κT +ν(trT)a−1T = μ(∇v + (∇v)T ), (1) where a > 1. For a = 2, a recent paper establishes the existence of a similarity solution for surface tension driven jet breakup. In this paper, we show that...
